In-depth guide to senior home care

What is senior home care?

Senior home care helps an older adult manage daily life at home. It ranges from company and household help to hands-on personal care and physician-ordered nursing or therapy. The level depends on needed tasks, not age alone.

Companion care supports meals, errands and housekeeping; personal care adds bathing, toileting and movement help. Home health addresses skilled medical needs, while therapy works on movement, daily skills, speech or swallowing. Each level has different requirements and payment options.

EliteCare provides every level through one Class A and Class B agency. A free in-home RN assessment begins the written plan. As needs change, families can discuss the next level with the same agency.

Aging in place in the Denver metro

Aging in place means living in your own home as needs change. A Denver metro family may arrange help for a parent in Aurora while relatives live or work elsewhere. Home care brings daily support to the person.

Stairs, bathroom layout and the path from bedroom to kitchen affect routines. Explain where your parent struggles and which tasks relatives cover during the assessment. The RN reviews these practical needs in the care plan.

Our service area extends within 30 miles of the Aurora office, across communities in Arapahoe, Denver, Douglas, Adams and Jefferson counties. Discuss both location and care needs when calling. Different homes and routines may require different support.

Signs your parent may need help at home

Unfinished laundry, skipped meals or less activity may suggest a need for company or household help. Difficulty washing, dressing or standing from a chair may call for hands-on personal care.

A discharge, new wound or ordered therapy may call for skilled services; wandering or confusion may need memory support. These observations describe needs rather than establish a diagnosis. Tell the nurse which specific tasks have changed and what relatives already cover.

Describe concrete examples, such as missing breakfast or needing help in the shower, instead of only saying your parent needs care. This gives the nurse a clearer picture of the day. Bring physician orders if skilled services have been requested.

How to talk with a parent about home care

Start with a task your parent finds difficult rather than a decision about their whole future. Help with shopping and hands-on personal care are different needs. Leave room to discuss each separately.

Include preferences about meals, privacy, routine and language. Explain which tasks relatives can and cannot cover. An RN assessment lets the family review these concerns together without choosing a level of care before calling.

Keep your parent’s preferences in the discussion, even if they hesitate about some tasks. The assessment reviews what fits today without promising that the same care will always be enough.

Paying for senior care in Colorado

Payment depends on the service and eligibility. Medicare may cover qualifying skilled home health and therapy, but not stand-alone companionship or long-term daily personal care. Aide help may be covered alongside qualifying skilled services.

Health First Colorado, IHSS and BCBS or Cigna coverage follow eligibility and plan rules. Private pay is available, and some long-term care policies may help. We can check the options that apply; the payment pages below explain the differences.
